More and more I have been hearing that eating avocados will make you gain weight. Typically from women I hear this quite often, ‘I restrict my fat and carbs because I don’t want to gain weight’. Which, couldn’t be and further from the truth, and how the body processes different food macronutrients!
First things first, consuming fats and carbs will not make you fat alone. Eating anything to excess will cause weight gain, but having an adequate amount of these macros in your diet will not make you gain weight. Fat and carbs in the diet play a very important role in the day to day functions of the body, that without them will make things a lot more difficult for you. And what I mean by this is that you will feel fatigued, stressed, run-down, sore, the works.
Fat in your body has certain roles that when you take a look at them, you will come to realize just how important it really is. First, fat provides an energy reserve! Typically, carbohydrates are utilized as the primary fuel and energy source for our bodies. But, when the reserve of carbs that held in the muscles, glycogen, is depleted, your body will then proceed to use fat as your primary source of energy.
Second, fat plays the lead role in helping our bodies absorb certain types of vitamins. These vitamins are: A, D, E, and K, these specific vitamins are often referred to as fat-soluble vitamins. What the heck does that mean? Simply, for our bodies to absorb and make use of those vitamins we need to consume fat at an adequate daily amount for these vitamins to do their job in our bodies. So without proper fat supplementation in our daily diets, our bodies cannot process vitamins properly.
Third, fat cells are stored in adipose tissue, maintaining a level of essential fat in our bodies is necessary because it provides insulation. Without essential fat, our bodies will not be able to easily stay at optimal temperature. This is problematic because if we cannot maintain our temperature by having essential fat on our bodies, they will go into overdrive forcing us to shiver to produce warmth. Beyond that, having fat that surrounds our vital organs is incredibly important because it helps to protect our organs from impacts that would be damaging and or life threatening.
The fat that comes from avocados is not high in cholesterol, thus making it a healthy fat option. Eating anything to excess will cause weight gain, but if you eat half or even a whole avocado a day, you will be perfectly fine. If you are trying to gain muscle, then the extra calories from the fat in avocados will ensure you are gaining weight fast while you are building strength.

A lot of people can’t stand the texture, others the taste, and another group that simply hate taking out the seed and getting the skin off! Avocado does have a tendency to stay unripe for a long while, and then all of a sudden it’s ripe for a day, and then it seems like the next it is bad and has to be tossed in the bin. But there are a few tips and tricks to figuring out when your avocado is at its optimal level of ripeness.
First things first, to know if your avocado is ripe you will notice that it is easy to squeeze. But not so easy that it completely squashes in your hand. Ensure that if it not hard, because it is not ripe enough to eat yet, and it will taste bitter and quite frankly, really unpleasant.
The skin will be a dark forest green, you will take a sharp knife and slice the avocado from the tip along the ridge of the inner pit all of the way around. You will then separate the halves, and there you have it!
Now, for removing the pit from your avocado, there are 2 easy methods for this. First, you can take the blade of your knife and whack it against the pit, enough to lodge it and pull the pit out.
The other popular way to remove the pit is to take the half that has the pit and make another cut, essentially cutting the half into quarter pieces. Doing this makes it a lot easier to pull the pit out by hand.
One of the easiest ways to eat an avocado is to simply make vertical cuts with your avocado still in the skin. Then take a spoon or your knife and run it along the skin and ‘meat’ of the avocado. Pull out your slices and put it on toast, mix it in with a salad, or even add it on top of any of your daily meals for an added healthy bite.
Another great way to eat avocado is to mash it up and you can add it to anything, potatoes, rice, cream of wheat, meatloaf, you could even add some salsa to it mashed up to make an avocado salsa guacamole.
My all time favorite way to eat avocado is to cut it into french fry like rectangles. Dip them into egg batter and then bread crumbs. Spread out the pieces on a sheet pan, and bake them at 400 degrees until golden brown. You can also just throw these into a fryer, or a pan with oil. A fun take on fried green beans, making a delicious way to add this healthy fat into your diet.
Avocado, like a lot of other food fads, has gained quite a bit of popularity in the past few years. But this fad is here to stay, for good reason!

Now, concerning this particular fat: there are good fats, and bad fats, the hard part is figuring out which ones to avoid. Now the fat from canola oil, crisco, bacon, and butter are very high in cholesterol and saturated fat which is damaging to the heart.
So knowing that the fat found in avocados is unsaturated fat can make you think twice about picking up that butter to grease your pan!
Another great benefit avocados have to offer are the varying vitamins and minerals found in it. These are: Vitamin K, Vitamin C, Vitamin B5, Vitamin B6, Vitamin E, Folate, and Potassium. In smaller quantities you can find: Magnesium, Manganese, Iron, Zinc, Copper, Phosphorus, Vitamin A, Vitamin B1, Vitamin B2, and Vitamin B3. In just one serving of avocado, all of these nutrients are consumed, making it an ideal candidate to add to your daily diet!
Avocados contain more potassium than a banana, along with loads of fiber as well. The extract has been linked with helping to relieve pains from arthritis. This fruit also contains antioxidants that help to protect your eyes and overall eye health.
